EFCE Excellence Award in Process Safety

  
The EFCE presents a triennial Excellence Award to recognise PhD thesis or papers published in the preceding three - year period, which demonstrates outstanding contribution to research and/or practice in process safety. This document describes how this award series will operate and the rules & procedures governing nomination and selection of candidates.
 

The award will comprise

  • A certificate
  • A cash award of  EURO 1500
  • Free access to the Loss Prevention Symposium
  • A travel grant (up to 500 Euros) to attend the Loss Prevention Symposium, where the award will be presented
     

The award will be presented

  • at the triennial Loss Prevention Symposium, in plenary session.
     

Eligibility

  • The award is presented primarily to researchers or engineers at the begin of their career, who have made excellent contributions to safety in the Process Industries.
  • Nominations can be submitted by
    • PhD supervisors at a PhD-awarding institution in an EFCE member country
    • Members of a national or regional member association of EFCE
  • Self-nominations are excluded. No more than one nomination can be submitted by the same person
  • The nominated PhD Thesis or publication must address a topic relevant to the field of Process Safety.
  • The nominated PhD Thesis or publication must have been published during the three calendar years preceding the closing date for nominations.
  • The nominated PhD Thesis must have been completed and published and the PhD degree examined and awarded.
     

Evaluation procedure

The evaluation will be a three-step process:
Step 1:   Based on a short-list prepared by the WP chairman and the secretary the EFCE Loss Prevention Working Party will
                recommend a winner together with two alternatives to the EFCE subcommittee
Step 2:   A subcommittee nominated by the EFCE board will confirm the recommended winner, or select another winner out of the two
                alternatives, in which case the reasons for rejection of the recommendation is communicated to the Loss Prevention Working
                Party
The decision in step 2 is final and no discussions of any kind will be entered into.
 

Publication of Selected Work

The successful candidate will be invited to make a presentation at the Loss Prevention Symposium at which the Award is presented. The presentation will be published in the proceedings of the Symposium and/or in CHERD or PSEP.
 


Call for Nominations 2009

The first EFCE Excellence Award in Process Safety search will be presented at 13th Loss Prevention Symposium 2010. PhD thesis or papers published between 2006-2009 may be nominated for evaluation, with a closing date of

31 October 2009

Late nominations will be rejected .

Decision by EFCE subcommittee:    30 April 2010

 
Nomination procedure, supporting documentation & closing date

Nominations should be submitted as PDF files via email to the "EFCE Safety Award Committee" ( ).

Supporting documentation: nominations should be submitted as a single package and must contain the following information, clearly set out:

  • Name & address of nominee
  • Name & address of nominator
  • Title of the publication
  • Date work commenced

Two letters of recommendation (no more than two pages each), from two independent referees (one of them can be the person submitting the nomination) outlining the key contribution to Process Safety and stating clearly why the contribution is considered to be truly outstanding and thus deserving the Award.

In case of nominating a PhD Thesis : An extended abstract in English (maximum 10 pages) containing the following information:

  • summary
  • problem addressed
  • state of the art
  • key innovations
  • applications/implementations/results
  • references
    Upon request: A copy of the Thesis, as published (this will be returned after the evaluation is completed, on request)

Note that all of the above documentation must be submitted together as a complete package. Except for the PhD-thesis, all other documents should be submitted electronically. PhD-thesis should be sent only when requested. Nominations which do not conform to these requirements will be rejected .
